Video

For better or for worse, I’m a mostly self-taught video creator. Starting with a GoPro Hero 3 Silver editing travel videos on iMovie to using a Canon Rebel T6i and editing in Final Cut Pro, to now using a Sony A7III, a Zhiyun Weebill S 3-Axis gimbal, and editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. You can tell me which metaphor is more fitting: falling deeper down the rabbit hole or continuing the climb the mountain of improvement.

‘We are foundry10’ brand video

As foundry10 continues to grow, we found it difficult to describe what the organization does in a concise way. Working with the Co-Founder and directors, we revised the organization’s theory of change and began working on a new brand video. I managed the end-to-end video production process including scripting, storyboarding, filming, editing, working with outside voice talent, and publication to launch ‘We are foundry10’.

‘Rest Assured’ Track Teaser Video

This freelance project was to tease the release of a new song, Rest Assured, and EP by my friend and musician, Yellowtael. Prior to filming, Yellowtael and I discussed the dreamy, nature look and feel of the music video through the use of mood boards and looking at other videos for inspiration. Then I developed a shot list as well as worked with Yellowtael on location for additional shots. After filming, I looked through the raw footage for the best shots, placed shots as I saw it fit with the music sample provided for me, and then exchanged in a couple revisions with Yellowtael until we came to the completed video. It’s always rewarding to do a project from start to finish.

Roadtrip Nation Ads

As the Marketing Video Editor and Videographer at Roadtrip Nation, one of my primary responsibilities is developing social media ads for their many documentaries and broadcast episodes. The goal of these ads are to capture an viewer’s attention in the first 3-5 seconds, using various editing and motion graphics techniques, and have them follow the call to action to watch the documentary or broadcast episode.

I select dynamic clips and soundbites to create an engaging story in 30-45 seconds and work in collaboration with the copy and design team to include appropriate copy and design elements to elevate the ad.

Roadtrip Nation YouTube

Another one of my responsibilities at Roadtrip Nation is filming and editing videos for their YouTube channel. Unlike the social media ads, where I am often working with footage shot by the production team, I handle the entire production process for their YouTube videos including of setting up camera, audio, and lighting equipment, selecting filming locations, directing the on-camera host, editing and color correcting footage, and finally publishing the video.

Frankly with Dean LaFerla

Before I started working for UCI School of Biological Sciences (UCI BioSci), they had no video content at all. So, with the help of an outside ad agency, we launched the Frankly with Dean LaFerla video series, aimed at interviewing UCI BioSci faculty about their research for the lay audience. From start to finish, these videos were created by me. I pick filming locations, set up lighting, set up audio equipment, work with the talent, operate up to 3 cameras for the interviews, and film b-roll. Then I edit the video, audio, and add animations for each episode as well as create promos for social media.
The two videos below are my favorite episodes in terms of production and editing. In fact, if you compare the first episode to these later episodes, there is a clear difference in (hopefully improved) quality and the progression of my learning about proper lighting and more advanced filming and editing techniques.

Note: The ‘Frankly with Dean LaFerla’ title animation was not created by me.
