ā€˜We are foundry10ā€™ Brand Video

No time to be nervous, only execute.

The most common question foundry10 receives is, ā€œWhat do you all do?ā€ Itā€™s honestly easier to show than explain. After only 8 months of working for foundry10, I was handed the keys to create a new branding video for the organization. While the previous brand video was serviceable, it ultimately did not cover foundry10ā€™s impact nor did it follow the newly written Theory of Change and I worked closely with the leadership team to fully understand what they envisioned as part of the new brand video. As part of the pre-production process, I worked with an outside ad agency to develop a script for a 1-2 minute video and to hire a voiceover artist. Once the script was written, I began storyboarding the video finding archival footage to show growth, developing motion graphics and text title cards where appropriate, and I directed and shot new footage to use throughout the video to illustrate certain key points in the script. I was so focused throughout the editing and production process, it did not occur to me until the end stages of the project that this video would be shown to anyone who visits our website, anytime my colleagues needed to explain foundry10, anytime someone searched for us online, this video would be the first thing they would see and their first impression of foundry10. Iā€™m immensely proud of how developing this video challenged me and also served as a major milestone of how far my video shooting and editing techniques have come.

As of July 2024, the ā€˜We are foundry10ā€™ has over 55,000 views.

Cameras: Sony A7IV | Edited using Premiere Pro and After Effects

As of June 2021, there are 14 episodes totaling over 2,200 views and the UCI BioSci YouTube channel subscription count rose from single digits to 210 subscribers!

Working on the Frankly with Dean LaFerla video series has pushed my self-taught editing skills to the limit. Iā€™m always looking for new ways to elevate the series through the addition of creative b-roll and the insertion of helpful graphics or still images to illustrate complex scientific concepts. Itā€™s also taught me about properly lighting and positioning people and positioning cameras for an interview-style video. Being able to have creative ownership of these videos from start to finish is easily one of the most rewarding and challenging parts of my job at UCI BioSci.

ā€˜Rest Assuredā€™ Music Video

Yellowtael x AllPointsWes. Name a better crossover.

My friend and musician, Yellowtael, approached me to film a teaser for a new song and EP he was going to release. This was my first freelance project and my first music video. What could go wrong?

Prior to filming, Yellowtael and I discussed the dreamy, nature look and feel of the music video through the use of mood boards and looking at other videos for inspiration. Then I developed a shot list on my own in pre-production. On location during production, I also worked with Yellowtael for additional creative shots that. After filming, I looked through the raw footage for the best shots, edited and color corrected those shots and arranged them to the music sample Yellowtael provided for me. We continued to work through different versions of the music video that best captured his vision.

I also photographed still images in conjunction with the video and edited the photos to fit the aesthetic of the music video and they are featured on his Spotify artist page and his social media promoting his new album.

You never forget your first freelance project. I couldnā€™t be more grateful to my friend, Yellowtael, for wanting to collaborate on this project and I couldnā€™t be happier with how this music video turned out. It once again pushed the limits of my cinematography and editing skills to produce this music video and every second of it was so much fun. 11/10 would do again.

ā€˜Frankly with Dean LaFerlaā€™ Video Series

Launching UCI BioSci into the YouTube-scape and teaching me all the aspects of video production along the way

Before I started working for UCI School of Biological Sciences (UCI BioSci), they had no video content at all, but wanted a more dynamic and engaging way to show the important research happening at the school that could be understood by viewers with little to no science background knowledge. The secondary goal of this video series was to increase our activity on YouTube and social media. In collaboration with an outside ad agency, we developed the ā€˜Frankly with Dean LaFerlaā€™ video series concept of the dean of the school, Frank LaFerla, interviewing UCI BioSci faculty members about their research.

My role for this ongoing project is primarily directing and producing each episode through every step of the production process. In pre-production, I learn about the guest being interview from the Communications Associate, I scout locations for filming the interview, and manage all equipment needed to film an episode. On filming day, I set up lighting, audio equipment, and operate up to 3 cameras at a time. I also direct the host and guests on how best to position themselves on camera and walk them through the production plan. Lastly, I edit all the episodes carefully editing video, audio, and adding necessary animations using the Adobe Creative Suite.

Note: The ā€˜Frankly with Dean LaFerlaā€™ title animation was not created by me.

The two videos below are my favorite episodes in terms of production and editing. In fact, if you compare the first episode to these later episodes, there is a clear difference in (hopefully improved) quality and the progression of my learning about proper lighting and more advanced filming and editing techniques.
